Kadale Parap Kannamd

(Kadale Bele Payasa)

Kadale (Chana) Parap (dal) – a particular variety of black chick peas.
The word Kannamd refers to a sweet dish and is called by different names including Payasam & Kheer. Kannamd can be made using many different ingredients. It is believed that Lord Krishna’s favorite dish was Kannamd.

Ingredients:
Chana dal: Approximately 2 cups. (Chana dal refers to hulled split black chick peas.)
Jaggery (unrefined cane sugar ) – 10 – 12 cubes
Coconut (grated)
Poppy Seeds (Gasagase or Khus Khus) 1 -2 Table Spoons
Whole Almonds – 1/4 cup (soaked in water)
Ghee (clarified butter)
Cashews
Raisins
Cardamom
Saffron

 Chana dal is cooked in water till it becomes soft.

In another vessel, boil and dissolve the jaggery cubes in 2 cups of water approximately.
Strain it with a fine mesh strainer to remove all the impurities.
Grind the grated coconut, poppy seeds, and almonds in a blender.
Add the blended ingredients and jaggery syrup to the cooked Chana dal.
Melt the ghee in a small pan and roast the cashews and raisins. Add this to the mixture.
Garnish with ground cardamom and saffron.
